Amy A. Otteson, M.A., L.Psych. (she/her)
A native of Fredericton, I returned to the capital region in 2010 to work in the public sector with children and adolescents. Over the last decade, I have worked in a variety of treatment settings including university counselling services, schools, hospital based outpatient program for adult psychiatric patients, hospital inpatient psychiatry and outpatient mental health for youth. I also have extensive experience providing assessment services for clients coping with a range of psychological problems (e.g., diagnostic assessments, personality assessments, ADHD, gender confirming surgery assessments). This breadth of experience has allowed me to develop a high level of competence in working effectively with people who are struggling with an array of psychological issues and conditions with considerable complexity.
I opened a part-time private practice in 2013 with a focus on youth, adults and the 2SLGBTQIA+ population. I specialize in treating people of all ages experiencing primary mental health problems. Specific areas of interest include, but are not limited to anxiety disorders (OCD, PTSD, childhood onset anxiety), personality disorders and 2SLGBTQIA+ concerns. I have expertise in issues related to transgender health and am a member of both the Canadian Professional Association for Transgender Health (CPATH) and the World Professional Association of Transgender Health (WPATH). I am WPATH trained. I am also a founding member of the NB Transgender Health Network and the chair of the Government of New Brunswick’s 2SLGBTIA+ Diversity and Inclusion Committee. I especially enjoy working with gender nonconforming youth and their families. My therapeutic approach is integrative, which means I try to find the treatment approach that will best suit the individual needs of my clients. I believe that a comprehensive approach is required to truly understand and meet the needs of each person I see. I practice evidence based psychotherapy (psychological approaches that are based on scientific evidence) such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT). I have recently completed DBT Intensive Training with BehaviorTech. |
